one year of spotify

In early 2024 I signed up for Spotify to see if my music tastes would become less cringe if I paid for what I was hoping must be powerful recommendation algorithms. They didn't.

My favorite artists are the kind that write songs about (not from) video games that I haven't played and have no intention of playing — I think Five Nights at Freddy's is the most recognizable such game, but right now Bendy and the Ink Machine has more coverage. Examples:

I understand paying for Spotify is uncool nowadays because they don't really pay artists that much, and even worse, have the fake artists stuff going on now? Still, I'm hoping my cringe tastes are sufficiently niche that they can't be sated with the mass-market filler, and I try to support artists directly here and there (though I could certainly do more).

Here's a sample of songs (that are not about video games) Spotify introduced me to this past year that I liked:

If anybody has suggestions for how I should describe what kind of music I like, please let me know.
