what's funny (funny, f-funny)

Something I often forget or fail to appreciate, when I think about banging my "let's all start blogs and write 10,000-word posts as our primary means of communication" drum, is that other people find many shortform posts funny, and I... don't...? Like, if I don't like the taste of junk food, it'd ring hollow for me to scold others for eating it.

This is strange because I think I have a sense of humor. A basic (unsophisticated) one, even. There are probably SNL sketches I've watched hundreds of times.1 Yet, these bottomless founts of content that so many people (including myself) worry might be too addictive, surely at least some of the time because of their humor, I've dipped into several times over the last few months, and each time I struggle to find anything that even mildly amuses me. There's many other emotions to be found! But the lack of humor (compared to what others perceive (I think)) sticks out. I don't understand this yet.

More facts that might illuminate my sense of humor: I'm a Dropout fan, particularly Game Changer. The funniest things I know of online are Hyperbole and a Half and The World According to Student Bloopers. I can recite every lyric from any of Bo Burnham's four specials and I'm only exaggerating a little bit.

  1. A shortlist: Science Room with Jason Sudeikis; What's That Name; I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus; My Best Friend's House; and even though it's an ad... Totino's with Kristen Stewart (happy pride month again)
